Responsible Use of Working Forests,
Consistent Protection of Old-Growth Forests

Eurobinia stands for the transparent, ecologically responsible use of working forests and for the protection of old-growth forests. Our Robinia wood comes from European forestry which has strict requirements that are geared towards a lasting preservation of the forest. The origin of our wood can be retraced at all times.

Fair Trade

We ensure a minimum social standard at all sections involved with eurobinia products. Furthermore, with our working forests and processing sites in Hungary and other East-European countries, we ensure manageable transportation distances within Europe.

European Robinia versus Tropical Timber

Eurobinia consistently refuses the trade of wood from tropical old-growth forests. As an alternative to tropical timber, eurobinia distributes wood products of the European Robinia that come exclusively from working forests.

However, the classification of the Robinia is also sometimes questioned by some ecologists: the Robinia is originally not a European tree – it comes from North America and arrived into Europe at the beginning of the 17th century. It displays an invasive behaviour and depending on location, it interferes more or less heavily with the ecosystem of the forest. Moreover, the bulk of the East-European Robinia grows in monocultural “age group forests”, mostly subdivided into small parcels. This form of forest management is not optimal.

Eurobinia cannot and it doesn’t even want to claim that it produces „eco“-wood following strict ecological criteria of the forestry. However, we can make the claim that we ourselves offer wood that is definitely superior to tropical wood primarily from an ecological point of view: the Robinia is currently one of the best domestic alternatives to tropical, boreal and chemically treated woods. It is the only European wood that satisfies the durability class 1-2 (DIN EN 350-2). The Robinia is generally recommended by environmental protection organisations for its scope of application. From our point of view, Central-European woods should always be preferred over woods derived from destructive exploitation or the blood woods of dictatorial regimes, even they are carrying a certificate. Each usage of European Robinia wood – whether certified or not – helps to reduce the destruction of tropical old-growth forests.
